Altar Flowers
The chart is located in the east hallway by the stairs. If no one signs up for a week, you can either use one of the artificial arrangements in the sacristy or ask the people from the previous week if they would consider leaving theirs in the fridge to be used for 2 weeks. Otherwise, it will just come out of the Women of the Church treasury for that week. If for any reason we do not need flowers, please let Steve Auck know by Tuesday. His contact information is listed in the front of the program.
Altar flowers are $36.00 each Sunday payable to St. Paul Women of the Church and given to Helen Luidhardt.
Altar Care Instructions
(Revised 2007)
-
There is a key for those doing altar duties; obtain it from the committee preceding you and pass it on to the next person.
-
We use oil candles which need to be filled. A wooden holder is under the table in the sacristy to place the candles as you fill them. A funnel is in the right hand drawer if you wish to use it. Fill candles to 1/2 inch from the top to prevent overflow when the wick is put in. Place pads/papers in the base of candles in candelabra frequently. This helps to absorb the oil and also will help keep it straight.
-
The wicks should be no longer than 1/4 to 1/2 inch at the top; carefully pull wicks down from the inside; do not trim. Relight wicks after readjusting to assure proper lighting. Refill candles as needed.
-
The Paschal candle in front of the church is also oil and needs to be filled. This will burn on Sundays from Easter to Ascension, on Pentecost, and for baptisms. Refill as needed.
-
Always use gloves to handle brass items. Gloves, dust cloths, a swiffer duster, etc., are in the right hand drawer of the sacristy table.
-
DO NOT use polishes or cleaners on brass pieces; they may remove protective finish or discolor.
-
The chart inside the sacristy door advises altar covers for the season or holy days. You may also check with the pastor.
-
Keep white communion and altar scarfs clean; check after each communion service. Return the communion cover to ist hander after use if you are not taking it home to launder. Communion is the first Sunday of the month at the 10:00 AM service and on special services as announced. Periodically check cloth on the altar in the basement and each Sunday School room and launder as needed. Also, check acolyte robes and launder as needed.
-
Contact individuals signed up for flowers on Sunday or Monday prior to their selected Sunday to remind them of Flowers and Fancies services or the actions they should take for other options.
-
The green altar vase liners should be left in the sacristy. PLEASE do not take them from the church. Containers are available in the lower portion of the table in the sacristy or in the cupboard above to take flowers home from the church.
-
Instructions for disengaging the alarm system are available upon request.
-
The funeral pall is in the closet in the sacristy. Make sure it is pressed and available for use as needed.
Food Committee
-
Once we are notified of a death, the food committee is responsible for contacting the family to learn their wishes regarding a meal.
-
There is a binder on the shelf as you enter the kitchen. It contains a planning form and notes about past funeral luncheons as well as a record of who has donated items most recently. Please use this to assist you in your planning.
-
The family is responsible for the costs of the meal, buns, cheese, and potatoes. The church will furnish the serving products, side dishes, desserts, and drinks.
-
As the food committee, you will contact church members to assist you in donating sides and desserts, food preparation, and helping to serve at the meal. If it is announced, many will frequently stay after church to help set up tables and chairs.
-
If you have any questions, please contact the church office or a member of the Women of the Church Executive Board.
